Playtonic games took to the internets this morning to announce more information regarding crowd-funded Yooka-Laylee. Most importantly, Yooka-Laylee will launch for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One only on 11th April 2017 for $35.
Where’s that Wii U edition that was so important to the original Kickstarter project? Well as you might expect, Playtonic has cancelled Yooka-Laylee for Wii U. Citing “unforeseen technical issues” the developers at Playtonic Games now hope to bring Yooka-Laylee to the Switch, although its unknown what that time-frame could look like.
This announcement should not come as a surprise considering Wii U’s place in the market right now, but I would understand any that may be upset. Yooka-Laylee gathered a lot of support from Nintendo fans longing to see a Rare-inspired 3D platformer on Nintendo systems. Early on, the Wii U was considered a main target for the project. Wii U owners now have only Zelda left to really look forward to as the Wii U continues its slow march towards death. I’m just happy those that backed the project specifically can move into another SKU if they’d like or ask for a refund on their initial investment.
Optimistically, its still possible Playtonic Games could provide a Switch update on January 12th around 8:00 PM Pacific | 11:00 PM Eastern. That’s the date and time Nintendo will showcase their Switch in full reveal fashion. It will be very interesting to see if how close Yooka-Laylee on Switch can be to the original release date considering the many developers touting how easy the Switch is to develop for.
