Whew. What a start to the year! While a lot of the “big” games are now behind us, that does not mean we have nothing else to look forward to. In fact, over the next few weeks, there are some titles that I am really excited about! They may not sell millions of copies or have TV commercials, but I am hoping the will provide some excellent gameplay experiences. Are any of them releasing this week? Yes, yes they are. Let’s take a look…

Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4)

I enjoy a good RPG, and if there is a good RPG inspired by the games I played as a kid, I am intrigued. Cosmic Star Heroine is a 16bit inspired RPG complete with the animated cutscenes you would see on fancy consoles like the Sega CD. Create your party out of a slew of characters and fight to save the galaxy! What more could you ask for? How about turn-based combat? They have that too. Cosmic Star Heroine looks to be another solid entry into the throwback style of RPGs we have been seeing and while I am looking forward to playing it, the question is can I pull myself away from Persona 5 to get it done? Only time will tell.

StarBlood Arena (PSVR)

While Sony has not been making a huge deal about VR, they slowly have been trickling out games to attempt to keep folks satiated. StarBlood Arena was first shown at PSX2016, and the turn around to release has been surprisingly quick! A combat shooter with six degrees of movement, you choose a pilot and ship based on how you play and enter one of 12 different arenas to compete against other combatants for glory and Blood Bucks! With a single-player mode to get your feet wet and 5 different multiplayer game types, StarBlood Arena seems to have something for everyone and I look forward to checking it out!

Yooka-Laylee (PS4)

Another nostalgic trip for the week, but instead of 16bit RPGs, Yooka-Laylee is trying to recapture the magic of 3D platformers. While I have never been a huge fan of this genre (I much prefer 2D platformers) I am willing to give Yooka-Laylee an opportunity to win me over. The characters seem fun and the mood light, which is something I can appreciate right now. With how down and dour so many games are, it is sometimes refreshing to play something that is bright, colorful, and not very serious. While I may not jump into Yooka-Laylee day one, I will keep on eye on it for a good deal, a drab day, or hopefully a time when those coincide.

That is it for me this week! A pretty good mix of games to jump into while I finish off the massive backlog the beginning of the year has given me. Anything you are interested in picking up this week? Did I miss something glaring? Comment below or chat with me on Twitter!
