You can’t have a winner every week, and this week isn’t looking too great on PSN. Arguably the largest release of the week, NBA 2K18, was actually released last Friday for the “special” preorder edition (but, actually, you could just buy it any time beginning Friday…it’s all a little confusing). Outside of that, you’ve got Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, which looks fine, but in a world that includes InJustice, it just doesn’t seem to compare. Instead, we are going to take a look at a couple smaller releases this week, as well as highlighting the sales that should be on your radar.
Burly Men at Sea
A cute, minimalistic game, Burly Men at Sea is a folktale about a trio of large, bearded fishermen who decide to seek adventure in the waters of early 20th-Century Scandinavia. The story is branching and includes encounters with creatures from folklore. It is very much a visual novel, and is coming to PS4 and Vita.
Ink is what you would get if you combined the gameplay of indie darling Thomas Was Alone with Unfinished Swan. In Ink, you control a little square as you platform through a variety of challenging levels. The catch is that, at first, you cannot see anything in the level aside from a blank canvas. As you hop around, your ink will splatter around the level and make the platforms, spikes and more visible. Your ink gathers onto platforms by touching them, double-jumping or dying.
If you need a platforming fix in a minimalistic package, Ink should fit that bill at only $10.
Final Fantasy IX
Sony stealth-announced a PS4 release of Final Fantasy IX at the Tokyo Game Show overnight, and it seems that many are excited for it. While I have never played a Final Fantasy game (outside of Tactics: War of the Lions on Vita), I always like to see the furor around an announcement. This release includes the original game plus trophies, no encounter modes, autosave and high definition. The classic game is selling for $16.80 this week, and will regularly be priced at $21 moving forward.
Playstation Weekly Sales
This week’s sales are focused on Assassin’s Creed and Batman. Considering that I’m largely over Assassin’s Creed and I’ve played every Batman game available. Nonetheless, if you’ve been holding off on either of those franchises, this may be the week to dive in:
- Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag ($9.89, regularly $29.99; PS4)
- Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection ($24.99, regularly $49.99; PS4)
- Assassin’s Creed Chronicles Trilogy ($9.99, regularly $24.99; PS4)
Note that at the time of this publishing, the Batman sales are not populated on the PSN.
This week, I’m gaming Destiny 2 on PS4 and Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and NBA 2K18 on Switch. What are you playing?
