In my never ending effort to play and review games 95% of the gaming community completed a year ago…I deliver to you my review of Dishonored: Definitive Edition! Set in the fictional, plague-ridden industrial city of Dunwall, Dishonored follows the story of Corvo Attano, bodyguard to the Empress of the Isles. He is framed for her murder and forced to become an assassin, seeking revenge on those who conspired against him. Sure makes sense, I would be pissed off too! This game gives you a bit of freedom on each level and how you want to tackle your objective whether it is take out specific targets or simply get from point A to point B without alarming folks. You can use hand to hand combat, or guns, explosives, or even magic to get through. I often chose the path of most resistance and tackled each objective head on, which wasn’t always the easiest way by far. Graphics – I enjoyed the art style in this game, it was pseudo-realistic. Set in a steam-punkesque London to me. It definitely helped tone down the violence in the game by making character models and the violence cartoon-like in nature.
I had not played the original so I can’t really comment on how much better it looked on a PS4 but overall ran very smooth and didn’t have any noticeable drops in frame rate or texture issues.
Controls – Everything was smooth including the jumping mechanics which I’ve sometimes struggled with from a first person perspective. Movement was tight and the button placement made sense and nothing felt out of place. The nice little touches of some audio coming from the controller added some cool effects as well. Fun Factor – I had a blast with this game, the environment added to the ambiance and made ironically enough this dying world more alive. From having multiple ways to get to your objective may have me go back to this game again someday and play it in an entirely different fashion. The powers you unlock throughout the game were interesting as well and seem to be even more ramped up! Overall if you are like me and had not already given this game a shot it is definitely worth your time. Not a terribly long game but had a little bit of everything thrown in to capture the attention of any gamer.
The story was solid and the world was different than most games I have been playing recently. I won’t get spoilery on here other than telling you overall sure the story has some plot holes and some things you might see coming from a mile away but as far as gameplay it is challenging, gives you choices, and overall plays well so it is definitely worth the less than 20 bucks you’ll spend on it now to snag it up in time for the sequel in November.
